MID TERM HAPPENINGS

August20

ANCIENT EGYPT

As part of our History studies, the students are currently researching about the life of key groups of people in Ancient Egypt. They are to imagine they are one of these people (pharaoh, scribe, embalmer, merchant etc.) and write a journal/diary about a day in their life. The students will work on this in class time as well as for homework over the  next two weeks.

BOOK WEEK

On Tuesday 21st, the author Phil Cummings will be talking to our class about creative writing strategies and how to hook the audience into your book. By all accounts he is most entertaining.

Our Book Week parade is on Friday 24th at 10.20 on the court near the library. It would be great if as many people as possible can get into the spirit of the day and dress up as a book character. It can be kept really simple.

UNLEY HIGH MUSICAL

A reminder that this Thursday 23rd we are visiting Unley High to view their students’ performance of ‘The Addams Family.’ We will be leaving school at 11.10 and returning at approximately 1.00 pm.

GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT

We are 2 sessions into our 4 session course. Our presenter, Sally, is terrific and clearly and confidently imparts all the necessary information to the students. The students have reacted very favourably to her and have been very engaged, while also asking lots of relevant questions.

The second semester has begun and as always, a jam packed term of learning is on offer.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Our school photo session for class and individual photos will be at 11.30am on Tuesday 14th August. While it is a requirement that hair below shoulder length is tied back at school, it is ok for hair to be down for the school photos if desired.

EXCITING NEW DANCE PROGRAM

28/07/18

Dear Parents and Carers

At the recent amazing Lighting Up the Arts (LUTA) concert, I spoke about my desire to further expand the extra curricula options for students in the area of performing arts at CLG, especially in the areas of dance and drama.

I am pleased to announce that starting at lunch time on Monday of week 3, we will holding auditions for interested students (boys and girls) to become part of what we are calling ‘CLG Dance’.

Only 24 students from years 5, 6 and 7 will be selected to become part of this high performing dance group which will be training every Monday lunch time for the reminder of the year with the intent to perform at both school and out of school events. For the remainder of 2018, they will focus on just performing one demanding and polished routine. The group will be learning and rehearsing a Modern Jazz and Hip Hop styled dance.

I am also pleased to announce that we have been able to secure the services of Michelle Coe who owns and runs the highly successful Michelle’s Dance School in Colonel Light Gardens. Michelle is a vastly qualified and a highly regarded dance teacher. During the Monday rehearsals she will be supported by one of our upper primary teachers, Belle Maduro who also loves and has a history of involvement in dance.

So what does this involve? If your son or daughter wants to audition for this group and is successful in being 1 of the 24 selected we are asking for the following:  They demonstrate a total commitment to CLG Dance by: o attending rehearsals every Monday the lunch playtime in the Music Room and any extra sessions needed o bringing the right attitude, work ethic and behaviour to each and every rehearsal o practice the routines at home o be available for the performances both in and out of school time

Audition process: It is important that students and families are clear on how this group will be selected and constructed. It is a wonderful opportunity for 24 CLG students. As the school is paying for it, our capacity to afford additional sessions for extra students is not possible. Auditions will be held for the different year levels over a few weeks on a Monday. Students will be advised in advance of the day of their year level audition. Monday was selected for auditions and rehearsals as it doesn’t clash with any other performing arts group.

How will it work?  Michelle will teach a basic choreographed dance routine to the group of interested students for the first 25 to 30 minutes of lunchtime, which they will repeatedly rehearse with music  A group of 4 staff members will then come and watch the routine initially as a big group and then repeated in smaller groups  The 4 staff members will then select those students from that year level who have demonstrated the best proficiency in mastering the routine – looking at style, timing, performance and the ‘x’ factor  The staff members involved range for those with experience in dance to a complete novices – you don’t need a lot of experience to identify who demonstrates the necessary skills and characteristics  Michelle will not be part of the selection process  As the sole criteria for selection in the group is on how they perform for the audition judges, students who have never had the opportunity to be involved in out of school dance instruction have as much chance as being selected as anyone else – we will be selecting the best  Being involved in outside dance groups or having a history of dance will play no bearing on the decision on who is selected – this question won’t even be asked  Due to the tight timeline, absence, injury or illness on the day of auditions will also not be taken into consideration – they will be no catch up auditions
(Page 2)

The school is funding the cost of the instruction to provide this opportunity. If your child is successful in joining CLG Dance, parents and carers will be asked to fund the cost of a basic performing costume which will be used for each and every performance.

The group will definitely will perform at a whole school assembly, the end of year concert as well as at least 1 other out of school hours event.

I am hoping that CLG Dance will continue in 2019 and be an ongoing opportunity from upper primary students at CLG. Participation in the group is only for this year. Students selected this year will need to reaudition next year if they wish to remain part of the group. New auditions every year gives all students a fair opportunity.

All students already participate in dance instruction as part of the music program every year. Unfortunately not everyone who is interested and auditions will be selected. Selecting only some students already happens at CLG with SAPSASA sports teams and some of our choirs. As it is a designed to be a high performing group, the students who best demonstrate their skill will be selected. CLG Dance is an extra curricula opportunity.

I think opportunities like these value add to the whole schooling experience at CLG. If you have any additional question, please contact me via email or phone.

Kind regards

END OF TERM 2

July6

The first semester is over. It has flown by with a multitude of wonderful learning tasks and experiences taking place.

L.E.D. CARDS

During the last week we have concluded our work on electrical circuits by making L.E.D. light birthday cards. I was so impressed with everyone’s efforts and their perseverance to try to get their circuits functional and the lights lit up. There were varying degrees of success, but an amazing amount of discovery learning was evident.

HATS

As we have been re-accredited as a Sun Smart school, the Council Cancer now require hats to be back on from the beginning of term 3. Please get organised with this over the holidays.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. I look forward to an equally productive second semester of  learning.

LUTA

June25

Congratulations to all the students who participated in LUTA last Thursday night and performed so capably. I hope you agree that it was a wonderful spectacle.

Our class act of Viva La Vida was wonderful, with many tricky choreographed moves to remember. Our instrumental piece was of high quality. Many people commented about how enthusiastic, tuneful and in time everyone was with their playing. I was very impressed by all the students in Room 4 and I’m sure you were all very proud.

Well done to Mary and Renee for their terrific duet of Over the Rainbow.

A special thanks to Marian Woodlands for all her efforts to provide the students with such a special opportunity to perform so confidently at Adelaide Town Hall. Thanks also to Michelle for the great choreography.

LAB ON LEGS

Last week the students attended a session of Lab on Legs. This program was a valuable addition on to our Physical Science topic of It’s Electrifying.

The session was very hands on, as Frank brought in a number of interesting experiments for the students  to discover information about electricity.

Some of the activities included:

  • attempting to light a globe in a series and in parallel
  • transferring and transforming energy using electric motors and magnetic fields
  • solar energy
  • wind turbines
  • making a Voltaic stack (the first basic type of battery)

Everyone was very attentive and actively involved with each task. Lots of discussion, questioning and trial and error took place. Mistakes were made and adjustments attended to, resulting in great learning outcomes.

STUDENT TEACHERS

We currently have 2 first year student teachers, Ellie Dart and Melissa Pisano who are observing and taking small groups in our classroom. They will be here on Thursdays and then for a 7 day block from the 14th to the 22nd of June. We welcome them to our class and will do everything possible to make their time with us a valuable learning experience.

LUTA

Lighting Up the Arts is fast approaching and we are all busy rehearsing for the night which should be spectacular. I hope you have all bought your tickets for the night at the Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday June 21st.
