2018 END OF SCHOOL YEAR

The end of the school year is upon us. It has been a busy and highly productive year in room 4. It has been gratifying to see the growth of every student throughout the course of the year.

To all the year 7 students, I wish you continued success as you embark on the next phase of your education. Good luck and best wishes to the year 6 students who are also leaving CLG for a new school. To the year 6 students who will be our year 7 leaders next year, all the best. I will definitely see you around next year.

I wish all the students and their families a Merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year.

END OF YEAR DISMISSAL REMINDER

In term 3 the Governing Council approved an earlier closure in term 4 only, of 1:00pm rather than the regular end of term finish at 2:10pm. This change was announced in the 9^th of August 2018 newsletter and has been referred to on calendars since.

 1:00pm is when students would normally start eating their lunch. As I am sure you can appreciate the last day of the year is not the most productive and so rather than coming back to class for 20 minutes after lunch, we will end the 2018 school year at lunchtime after students return to class after our final whole school assembly.

As reported previously, arrangements were put in place for OSHC to begin as soon as school is dismissed.

What a fabulous night we had at the concert. The kids really stepped up and their performance was full of energy. Despite the early heat we all managed to get through it well. Thanks to all the parents who attended and helped support their children. The costuming looked amazing.

 

CONCERT ADJUSTMENTS – INFORMATION UPDATE

Staff met this morning and have decided upon the following adjustments to ensure student safety and wellbeing due to the projected high temperature.

1.    The concert start will be delayed until 7:00pm, with the pre-concert items now starting at 6:30pm

2.    Therefore children now need to report to their classrooms at 6:45pm

3.    Teachers will limit the time the students will be outside watching items, spending 10 to 15 minutes in their air-conditioned rooms prior to their performance and another 10 to 15 minutes afterwards before coming to watch some other performances

4.    We will maximise the use of any shade if we can still view the performances

5.    Parents may choose to collect their child and leave to go home after your child performs, however you will need to do so from the classroom once the students leave the stage

6.    We ask that you do not collect your child while they are sitting on the grass when other classes are performing

7.    Teachers will continue to monitor their students during the night and younger students in particular may spend less time outside than the older students

8.    All classes will be on the oval watching the final acts

9.    We have hired 2 mist fans to help with the heat

10. We understand that parents and caregivers know their children the best,so if these adjustments do not meet your needs please don’t come to the concert

If your child is attending please ensure that:

§  they have eaten and are hydrated before reporting to the classroom

§  sunscreen is applied before coming

§  they have a sun safe hat

§  they have a water bottle

Parents and carers are welcome to bring shade shelters however they will need to be set up in the nominated areas at the back and on the sides. Please look after yourself.

School Concert Update

The weather forecast for tomorrow is for a maximum of 39 degrees. This is unfortunate, however logistically it is not possible to reschedule the concert to another time due to the availability of the many others who provide the necessary equipment and food options. This date is booked with these providers many months in advance. Our suppliers have other commitments to honour on Friday or next week. We either need to go ahead with some modifications or cancel it completely. We have spent too much time and effort to consider cancelling. As the concert does not start until 6:30pm, we anticipate that it will be a little cooler by this time.

As a school we will ensure that our students are not sitting in the direct sunlight for the whole 90 minutes. Staff are meeting before school tomorrow to consider measures and put plans in place to protect our students and staff. We will completely understand if some families and the elderly choose not to attend. Any parents, relatives and caregivers need to make sure they come prepared to sit on the oval and also protect themselves. We are fortunate that it is on the oval as some families may choose to erect some sun shade protection at the very back or side where they will still see and hear the concert. So in short, we will ensure we look after the students and we ask those attending to take every measure to look after themselves, even if this means not coming.

Excursion Wednesday 21st

A reminder that our excursion to Christie Walk, the eco village in the city is this Wednesday 21st November. All consent forms, medical notes and payments should be back by now. 

We are leaving at 9am and should return at 1pm. Recess and a drink are needed. 

The weather forecast looks to be a bit wet so an umbrella and/or rain jacket will be needed.

End of Year Concert

Our end of year concert is on Thursday 6th December. The theme for this year’s concert is ‘music with a message.’ The class chose to perform the song All Stars by Smash Mouth from the Shrek movie. We will be performing with the students in Mrs Weaver’s class. We discussed costuming ideas and agreed upon dressing up as characters from the movie. This gives lots of opportunity for creativity so students and their families can start thinking and planning what to wear.

 

 

 

 

 

The final term is underway and it’s sure to be a busy one. We have the Footsteps Dance program, the school concert, end of year excursions and for the Year 7 students, their graduation to prepare for. More information about these exciting coming events will be forthcoming. Of course, our usual learning will be taking place with the term 4 overview attached below.

SCIENCE and HASS

Our Science and HASS topics cover issues about sustainability, water and resources. One of our first lessons for science was a discussion about mining resources. We simulated the process with our ‘Birdseed Mining’ task. Hidden in the birdseed were various resources that had to be mined with tweezers. The cost of these resources went up and down depending on availability, difficulty of extraction and demand. After 15 minutes each group had to total up the dollar value of the resources they had collected. We discussed a variety of reasons that some groups were able to mine more resources than others.

BOARD GAMES

Over the first 2 weeks for homework, the students worked on constructing a board game to reflect aspects of being a good sport. This week we began playing these games in groups. I was really impressed by the variety of ideas and the amazing creativity and effort put into many of the games. Peer feedback was most positive. SCIENCE

Some of Earth’s resources are renewable, including water that cycles through the environment, but others are non-renewable.

GEOGRAPHY

Classification of environmental resources and the forms that water takes as a resource. The way that flows of water connect places as they move through the environment and the way these affect places. The quantity and variability of Australia’s water resources compared with other continents. The nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it.

BUSINESS and ECONOMICS

Tradeoffs, opportunity costs, limited resources, prioritising and making sustainable choices.

TECHNOLOGIES

Digital technologies – using Grok Learning to explore aspects of coding.
Binary systems for computer coding.
Design technologies – Pageant float with buddy class.

HEALTH

Investigating reasons why young people choose to use or not use drugs, and proposing strategies to make informed choices. Exploring how family, peers, popular culture and the media influence how individuals interact and the choices they make in given situations.

MATHEMATICS

Patterns and algebra. Order of operations. Chance and Data. Cartesian planes. Data representation and Interpretation.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Table tennis skills, PE week 5 celebrations, Adelaide 36ers visit, Tae Kwon Do and Gymnastics.

ENGLISH

Class novel – a variety of short stories focussing on human relationships. Use comprehension strategies, focusing on critical literacy, to interpret and analyse information and ideas. Identifying and discussing similarities and differences between texts, including those by the same author or illustrator. Reading independently as well as in pairs and groups.

Activities to continually improve and expand vocabulary in writing. Drawing on personal knowledge, text analysis and information from a variety of sources to express or challenge a point of view. Spelling will focus on rules, patterns and strategies, as well as focussing on individual spelling errors. Rereading, editing own, and others’ work. Genre writing focussing on reviews.

The use of clear, persuasive language to role-play situations such as scripting and rehearsing how to refuse drugs that may be offered, such as medication, tobacco product or alcohol. Sharing ideas and responding to issues in class meetings and general discussions.

JAPANESE

Japanese challenge (continued), Hiragana and
Reviews.

PERFORMING ARTS

Consolidation of music and dance concepts covered over the year. Opportunities for students to demonstrate their musical ideas in their own compositions. Preparation for the end of year concert.

 

VISUAL ARTS

Continuation of Project on World issues and Digital Art. Multicultural art forms around the world.

LUTA DVD

Two copies of the LUTA DVD are doing the rounds of the students in the class to take home. We request that the DVD is only at home for one night and then returned so that the next person on the list is able to borrow it.

 

 

Term 3 is nearly at an end and it is been extremely busy and very productive. 

I’m sure everyone who attended the choir performance on Tuesday night was suitably impressed by the outstanding effort of all choir members, particularly those in the first two rows!

Thanks to all students, families and friends who attended our Ancient Egypt exhibition. I hope you were as appreciative as I was of the excellent standard and variety of exhibits from the students. It was great to see so many people taking time to scan the QR codes and read about the artefacts.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS ON LEARNING

Thank you to all the students and parents who have been involved in our Student Led Conferences this week. I was very impressed with how each student clearly and thoughtfully discussed their learning and shared relevant and interesting examples of their work. It is a great opportunity for the students to be accountable for their learning and for parents to gain an insight into what happens in the classroom. As the children get older some spend less time sharing with their families about what happens at school. I know from comments I heard that a number of parents were pleased to have the opportunity to share in their child’s learning.

ANCIENT EGYPT MUSEUM EXHIBITION

As you should be aware, the students have been studying the ancient civilisation of Egypt. To conclude our work, the 4 year 6/7 classes will be holding an ‘Egyptian Museum Exhibition’ in Langley Hall on Thursday 27th September between 5 and 6.30pm. The students have all been given a flyer with the details. We hope as many family members as possible can pop in to view the exhibition.

SPORTS DAY

Sports Day  is this Friday and the weather is looking great. All students must wear their school hat, have sunscreen and a water bottle. We all looking forward to a fun filled day of activity, team work and competition. 

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Today the students brought home information about booking in a time for next week’s student led conferences. Please book in a session time online according to the details provided on the booking information note.

The students will have a number of interesting work samples and reflections to share with you. I look forward to seeing parents and their children next week.
